200 oceanrunner running too rich?

I have 1998 Johnson oceanrunner 200 Hp outboard on my boat. The motor seems to run fine at idle and wide open. Of course, like all Johnson motors it does tend to smoke more than other manufacturers and does like to drink gas and oil. my question is that it seems to burn more oil than I would assume is needed in comparison to the amount of fuel being burned. I would like to know if there is a procedure to make sure that I am getting the most effecient fuel to oil ratio that is required for this engine. Which in turn might create a little less smoke to deal with. :D I would like to get it as fine tuned as I can with of course not running it too lean which would be alot more costly for repairs than the price of extra oil and the amount of smoke I am getting. Thanks for any advice you can give.

if your vro (oil gas pump), is original, it can cause this problem. what happens is the diaphragm wears out causeing a double oil.

It should burn about 50/60 gals of fuel to 1 gal of oil.
