Re: 2000- 115 hp - 4 cyl. - 2 stroke Merc
Starting proceedure can make all the difference in the world to this motor.
The 2 + 2 only idles on the top two cyl's so it is important to start it and run at about 1800 rpm to quickly warm up the motor in oder to bring the idle down and stay running on only the top two.
Generally, the motor will start and warm up on all cyll''s if the throttle is raised a small amount, once warmed up and the throttle is reduced to idle the motor should idle fine on the top two cyl's.
Try following these steps and see if it helps improve your starts.
1 Trim the motor level and pump up the primer bulb till firm, but do NOT 'smash' it and force the carbs to flood, a firm 'handshake' is all that is necessary.
2 Move the 'Fast Idle Lever' all the way up. If your control box does not have a Fast Idle lever then push the Neutral button and move the shift/Throttle lever forward till you feel the throttle begin to open then about an addition 3/4 inch
3 Turn the Ignition ON, Push the key IN to activate the Fuel Enrichener/Choke, hold the key in while you turn the key to crank and start the motor.
4 Once the motor fires and starts (which it should within just a few turns)immediately release the key, not just to stop cranking the starter but to return to its 'normal' out position and the enrichener is off. Be ready to reduce the throttle just enough to keep the motor in the 1800 to 2000 range, also be ready to momentarily push the key in again to rechoke the motor for just a heartbeat if the motor rpm starts to drop below 1500, 'cause it is still cold and needs just another small shot of fuel.
5 Once motor speed stabilizes then begin gradually reducing throttle by small amounts until fully warmed at down to your normal idle speed.
