2000 150 Ficht, lower unit problem

Without warning I just put motor in reverse. Makes a noise like parts tumbling around. The propellar turns and the boats backs out. In forward it runs without noise or any signs of a problem. Is this fixable without replacing the lower unit?? Need opinion before I take it in next week......Tks, Diver

You'll have to take it apart for an accurate answer. Most likely its repairable since it doesnt sound like the pinion broke, which most likely would have destroyed the case.<br /><br />The gears of that era were questionable at best. They are much better now and some aftermarket gears are very good. If you do need an aftermarket set I will be happy to hook you up with a supplier that has the good ones.<br /><br />Good luck!

Common failure on that case no all pinion failure come thru the case. 10%maybe.

Your problem could also be just an adjustment of the shift cable, loose linkage, or incorrect shift rod height, allowing the clutch dog to jump out of reverse occasionally. More expensively, it could be a worn dog and reverse gear jumping out.

Tks Seahorse, It was cable adjustment. Thought sure I would need a lower unit, unbelievable sound. Back and running in the Sound. 4th season, first problem with this outboard.....Diver
