2000 150hp boggs down when put in gear.....

my 2000 150hp runs good idles fine purs at cruising speed but when going from idle into gear (R or F) it boggs down and have to give it lots of throttle to get it past what seems to be a dead spot. could this be clogged jets or needle valves.
Ran it out of gas last year and ever since then this has been happening. so I am thinking dirt ?

Could be dirt, sounds like the idle is to lean. Try opening the slow speed jet some.

How is that done? Is thinking pulling the carbs and checking the needle valves and float levels.
