Hi Guys! Have a friend with a 2000 150hp.
the main 20amp fuse blew had no power to the motor. replaced the fuse, she started up ran fine but now have no tach and no charge the batts they went dead could not turn over the motor. I am thinking the rectifier blew out?
but why? something made the main fuse blow could that have blew the rectifier out? only have 12v at the volt meter when running...

Or were the battery cables clean and tight (both ends) and are the cables in good condition. If not -- the rectifier is toast. If the tach doesn't work either, that's another clue the rectifier is gone.

before this charging problem. The water pump went and he over heated it bad enough that the little sensor screw caps where melted ? could that have roasted the rectifier getting that hot?

What sensor screw caps???? Water cooled rectifiers needs to have cool water to stay cool. If the engine was overheated, so was the rectifier. That brings up another question. Did the overheat warning horn sound and if it did, why wasn't the engine turned off. If the horn didn't sound, then fix it so the engine isn't destroyed the next time this happens. Those warning horns tell you things are wrong NOW -- not tomorrow, next week, or when one has time to look into it. Ignore a warning horn and the owners wallet better have plenty of green backs in it. Shucks -- I'm preaching again.

Yes I hear you. I was not on the boat when It over heated. I looked at it the next day and did a comp test and found these two small sensors with a wire that goes into a small hole on each of the cylinder heads, there was a black plastic cap that srcews in and holds them in place that was just melted.
so this motor did get very hot. So starting to think the heat fried the rectifier to.but do not no why the main fuse blew?
I had a older 1988 200hp johnson years back and replaced the rectifier many times is it in the same place under the flywheel?
