Best thing to do is get a rebuild kit and remove the carb, clean it and use the kit to rebuild it. It does have a float which is normally accesable by removing the float bowl. But if it were me, I'd do the whole 9 yards and be done with it. Yes, float needle could be stuck and may do so again if not replaced. The kit will come with a new one. In a pinch, rap on the float bowl with the handle of a screwdriver to try and free up the float. Not to hard, just tap on it firmly...

EDIT: Please keep your post together. Gets confusing trying to follow 2 posts. Plus, you will get more answers if everyone knows what's going on..

Number 9 is the float bowl. Not your model, but you get the idea...

Re: 2000 - 20 HP Merc - NO GAS TO CARB !!!

Hi Rick ,
Thanks for the reply . Sorry about posting twice but it looked as though I was not going to get an answer on the first so I re-worded the first and posted it as a new message . We are wondering how to get the float bowl loose as the bottom half of the engine coweling won't allow entry to that part of the carb . Also , it looks like if we want to remove the entire carb. we can't get to the bottom nut/stud unless we pull the entire power head . Any more help would be greatly appreciated . Smitty

I think you can get to the lower bolt to remove the carb by removing electric starter if equipped. would be better to tell if you had a picture I don't really run across too many 20 hp motors.

Hello again Rick --- The serial number for this 20 Hp Merc is OT178929 --- Thanks for the come back - wish there was some way to return the favor . We will try to remove the electric starter , then the whole carb . Sounds and looks like a lot of work for a stuck float but rapping on the carb. has not worked . You guys are great --- thanks again ----Smitty

Re: 2000 - 20 HP Merc - NO GAS TO CARB !!!

THANKS --- THANKS --- THANKS
You guys are terrific --- we yanked the electric starter , remoced the choke *** 'y and then the carb . Removed the screw that holds the bowl to the carb. and removed the EMPTY bowl . Apparenrly the float needle was stuck as we removed it and then was able to pump gas thru the carb. We are thinking if we run the gas out of the bowl every time we quit using the motor it should not get stuck in the closed position ( float raised ) again . Although , it might get stuck the other way and stay open and flood the carb. , etc. We will invest in a rebuild kit in the future and do it right . Thanks again for the help --- hope I can return the favor some day .
