I'm looking to upgrade my 1988 6hp 2 cycle kicker motor with a newer 4 stroke.

I've had good luck with both my 1988 70hp and 1988 6hp Johnsons and would consider another Johnson if they are any good.

Any thoughts? These little 4 cycle outboards good or not? Any known problem areas?

Thanks!!!

You can't really "upgrade" a johnson 6hp with a 4-stroke 6hp.
Your '88 6hp will probably outlast you if you keep a water pump impeller in it and use it regularly or keep the carbs. clean.
The 4-strokes are a little quieter and a lot heavier. They have the same lower units, which is the part that usually goes out long before the powerhead. All the 4-stroke brands I've heard of require more and more expensive maintenance but seem to be reliable motors. I believe the mercury and tohatsu 4-strokes may have the same powerhead.
