Hello All,

I bought the 82 Grady with this engine that has approx 180 hrs. on it. Three times now it hasn't started for me. I pulled the dist. cap off last night, it was the original I'd say cause the bolts were coated with black paint still. Anyways, it looked like crap so I replaced it. The "kit" I bought had the rotor too. I never saw a rotor with the little upside down "can" attached. I tried to lift the old one up but it wouldn't budge. Is there a trick for removing these? I don't wanna break nothing on my new motor!

Thanks in advance

Question is, do all rotors simply lift straight up? Or does this type have to be in a certain position or something? Any trick to freeing them up if it's corroded onto the....... ? Heading out there tonight, so figured I'd bump my post for a possible answer......

90 degrees out finally!!! Beach weather!

Thanks Lost Canadian,

I've been pulling and tugging on it, but I'm afraid if I break it I'll be in deeper trouble.
Boat's running with the new cap, just would like to replace rotor for the records and to prevent future "no-starts"

I never saw one with that little can attached to it but I've never had one that wouldn't "lift" off either......

Thanks for the reply/link!

Just take a big screwdriver and pry the rotor off. You will ruin the old one, but you were replacing it anyway. The factory uses a loctite of sorts and the only way to get the thing to pull off is to use a torchlamp to heat it up. P.S. I once tried to pull one of those rotors with my hand pressure and I pulled so hard the rotor broke, cutting the hell out of my finger as my hand slipped past the now jagged piece of plastic,Trust me just pry it off.

hello
the service manual has all the info you need.
read it.
to remove the rotor your supposed to heat it with a heat gun. I use my mini propane torch. the specified locktite should be used on reasemmbly. take care with the loctite.
good luck and keep posting

Ok I'm bumping this, can't afford the manual right now, sold my Evinrude with Clymers, Seloc and OEM, so I do appreciate manuals, but was gonna wait till summer's over as I'm still rigging/troubleshooting the new rig and moneys tight. 200 hours on the engine, shouldn't be having problems starting, but I am, have replaced cap, plugs, battery and fuel filter. Another post will describe my problems, but if someone could describe this rotor thing a bit more, such as the loctite? Are there screws? And what does the shaft look like under it, is it a half moon type design? Thanks.

Edit: Ok I can see from the link lost canadian posted, the dist. shaft upper portion is slotted.
