Hi,
I just purchased a 2000 Carrera Caliente 18' open bow I/O with a 4.3L V6(205HP),4 barrel carb., transom exhaust, Alpha outdrive with 1.62. It came with a high Five prop (13 1/4 X 21 Pitch), which I really feel doesn't help my boat at all! I have a friend with a similar boat, size, same engine, but, is using a 3 blade and 23 pitch prop and doesn't have the transom exhaust and swears he gets 66+mph! I would be static if I could get 62mph! If I put a 3 blade on, what would be the size & pitch to get the max. speed/performance? Would a 19" , 23" work better? He wont tell me his prop size. I am not interested in swapping to a V8, especially with these gas prices!

I have the same motor with the 205hp on a 18ft Sea Ray and i am running a 23 pitch 3 blade. I don't see how your buddy is getting 66mph out of this same set up. I can do about 51mph but that is taking rpm's up to 5000-5100 which is a little high. You want your rpm range at wot to stay between 4400-4800. I thought about trying the 21 pitch to see if that brought my wot rpm's down a little bit, but haven't had the chance yet. It really depends on what your rpm's are doing at wot. When you get it close to the 4800rpm range at wot than you know your proped right.

I have a 20' Chaparral w/ the same engine. I'm running a 14 1/4 by 21 3 blade stainless and my WOT is at 4800 rpm's and the boat hits 50 to 53 mph depending on water conditons.

Here's a great site you can use to help determine proper prop pitch, ( Whew, say that three times real fast!).
You can enter your boat and motor info along with gas and extra weight in the boat and it helps to pick a couple of props in both stainless and aluminum. It sure helped me and the results were great.
Also, iboats is giving a 10% discount thru the newsletter on all their prop sales.

Link removed....
Guys, we do NOT allow direct links that contain sales that we, as well could sell. There are several prop calcs on the site that are allowed.

The high five is a lot of prop.......13x21 5 blade effectivly a 23 pitch 3 blade with a 1.62 gears id almost bet your lugging down that motor to about 42-4400 rpm.

Can your post a accurate tach reading while at WOT along with how much weight is in the boat while underway..

But in general, a good turbo or stilletto in a 21 pitch would be a good choice or maybe a 22pitch Enertia....A lot of myabe's there...;) with out a rpm reading its just a guessing game
