2000 40 hp won't go faster than idle speed

Just purchased a 2000 40 hp tracker took it out first time it overheated. I took it in and after almost a month they replaced the water pump. Now it doesn't overheat it starts fine but when I push the throttle it won't go any faster than idle speed.

I don't want to take it back in if I can avoid it. Anyone have any ideas what this problem could be?

You didn't mention if the BOAT won't go faster or if the MOTOR won't go faster.

If the engine revs but the boat will not go then look at the prop, the hub could be slipping.

If the engine won't speed up then check the throttle cable to be sure it is working, connected, not broken, etc.

Repost with more information.

Thanks for the response charlie the motor wont rev faster even out of the water I thaught it could be the throttle cabe but I'm not sure how to tell. Another thaught could be bad gas ? any info would be great

With the motor shut OFF, take a good look at the carb linkage, see how the throttle cam moves the carb to full throttle as you move the control lever.

If it moves correctly then you can assume that the cable is not broken.

Now look at the timer plate under the flywheel, watch to see if it rotates with the throttle opening.

If both of these check out then you may have a serious fuel restriction not allowing enough fuel to or through the carb to feed much more than an idle. Start checking the fuel line, filter, all connections from the tank up to the carb.

Also check your spark plugs, a very sooty fouled plug may only idle but fail at an further throttle opening.

I think I found the problem when I push the throttle the shifting cable moves into gear but the other cable does nothing.

Do I have to replace both cables at the same time or can I just replace the one not moving? Thanks for the help
