I have a 2000 5.7 Volvo penta that the oil pressure comes and goes setting alarm off. I have changed 2 senders, the one above the oil filter and the one next to the distrbutor cap. I know I have good pressure cause I checked it with a mechanical gauge. I'm thinking its my dash cluster. Anybody else hear of this? Thank you for any help. Jay

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... Check All the Grounds,....

Maybe the switch(sender), maybe the motor, maybe the dash, but it sounds Ground related,...
'ell,.... Start at the Battery's Ground post,...

The alarm goes off, when the circuit goes to Ground,...
The gauge goes to Zero, without a Ground,...

Hi there Jay, welcome to iboats!:) Do you happen to know the full engine model number? Is it carbureted or fuel injected?

Also the oil gauge moves from normal PSI to 0 and back? any other gauges do it by chance?

Does your gauge cluster look like what you would have found in the car night rider?:D:cool:

I am working on it tomorrow, will start by checking all grounds. Its fuel injected, type is SX-M. 5.7PEFS. 5.7GSI. How can I check at the sender, then at the dash to see if I have a problem in between, or at the dash? Voltage or resistance? My dash looks like mechanical type gauges, not digital. Pressure goes normal then just lose it with alarm going off, then alarm stops but still no pressure. no other gauges have a problem. I'm glad I joined this fourm, i'ts great. Thanks for all your help! Jay

What you need to do is first make sure your not overfull on oil. Check it with the boat sitting in the water. Once you rule that out, pull the sender and plumb in a mechanical gauge and see what the engine is actually doing. If the engines oil pressure is actually bouncing around like that you either have a bad oil pump or have sludge in the engine. But if it's not, then it's electrical.
