I mainly fix IO boats but have gotten into a 50hp yr 2000 johnny for a buddy. I did a search here and got some good hints to check before throwing parts at it. I pulled the starter and checked the pluse line it has been rubbed but not thru I vaccumed tested the hose and it checked good,it has a good pluse also. I have confirmed that we do not have a air leak with clear hose, I have checked pwr and ground at the connector pins. they are in good shape, the oil in the tank is tcw3 and has no gas in it. usualy you can hear a tick from the pump when it cycles good or bad from my experience, I have no tick and cannot feel it cycle either. used the clear hose to watch for fuel draw into the pump no draw. flat out the pump is not working my worry is. could there be something else causing the issue? could a loss of tach signal make the pump not work? I see a grey wire in the connector and assume it is a tach signal wire. the only way this thing will run is by pumping the baulb and then it will run out and stall. thanks bob

Explaining the test of the VRO can be quite involved. The manual will give the step by step tests.

thanks r. johnson if everyone had a manual this site wouldnt be as great as it is! the long winded note I wrote described half of the things in the manual. my questions was is there anyother way electricaly the vro could fail, not having any pluse from the pump is different to me. on the IO list we help lots of people without the manual!
thanks bob.......

A D mobie,

The electronics on that motor compare a pulse signal from the VRO to the tach signal to ensure that the VRO is pumping oil for any given RPM. If there is a big enough difference between the tach signal and the VRO signal, the alarm is sounded. But I do not believe that a failure of the tach signal will prevent the VRO from pumping. The signals are used for alarm purposes only.

The VRO/fuel pump unit is mechanically driven by vacuum pulses from the crank case, no electronics involved in the actual pumping of fuel. My guess is the fuel pump diaphram has failed and that is keeping the fuel from being drawn up the clear hose you used. Talk to your Johnson/Evinrude dealer for what parts are available to rebuild the fuel pump side of the VRO.

Hope this helps you out.
