2000 60 HP warning alarm

I have a 2000 60 HP Johnson that was put on a 1996 American Skiff that originally had a 40 HP on it. This weekend we had the boat out and were trolling some shrimp poles, not using the Johnson. When we finished, we started the Johnson, the gauges went through the normal test flashes and warning alarm test. The only problem was the alarm stayed on but at a considerably lower volume. There were no lights on the gauge and the motor was running fine, the pee hole was normal and we mix our own gas/oil. When we got it home, I tried turning the key to the first position to see if the alarm would work, it didn't.

Is the warning alarm inside the gauge or in the control box? I've never really paid much attention when it was working fine. Is this a common problem?
