Hi oberboat.....<br /><br />Well....if ya' use the rig heavy and you have only changed the lower unit gear lube only twice since 2000, then it ought to be black. Gear lube turns black from age. It will break down and overheat and turn black. If this is the case and you use the rig a lot, change the gear lube more often. If I'm wrong, please let me know. Thanks.
