hi everyone, new to the iboats crew. i have a 2000 90hp 3 cylinder, 2 stroke mercury that has a sneeze at idle. i have cleaned the carbs and set all idle screws to 1-1/2 turns out to start with. i found when it sneezes that there is a small poof and leak of fuel/oil coming from what i found out is a bleeder hose. could the hole in the bleeder hose or bad check valves cause this problem? i ordered all new hose and valves. the battery is standard marine starting battery and i have found no burned up wires under the cowl. i am pretty handy with motors but dont really know how to go too in depth with these 2 stroke outboards when it comes to problems like this.

Which, with the screws 1-1/2 turns out, would indicate a air leak into the crankcase so this damaged hose could be a possible cause.

But I have the same engine and it does not have breather hoses or valves in the hoses that I have ever come across. The only valve in a hose that I know of is the check have in the oil injection system. It's why I wonder what they are.

A disconnected pulse line to the fuel pump could cause a lean condition one cyl (Bottom one I think). A failed enricher system line could cause a problem in all 3 but then it would cause a real mess when choking.
Were the gaskets between the carbs and block changed / good condition when carbs were put back on?

A fuel blow back through the carbs could also be caused by damaged reeds (didn't leave any parts in the engine when the carbs were off I hope)

These are the ramblings of an old man

the gaskets from carbs looked almost new. the check valves i am talking about is #6 in the diagram. the leak i am having with the poof is at the bottom of #2.

the motor is a little bit hard to start but once running starts back up fine. the problem is it will be idling smooth then a little sneeze every couple seconds. looks and sounds just like this but a bit harder.

so i replaced the bleed hoses and check valves along with spark plug wires and spark plugs. the sneeze is now gone but i can hear while idling the motor seems to have a variation in idle rpm. i can hear it slightly go up and rpms and drop back every 5-10 seconds or so. is this normal for this motor?

No. I had the 2002 version of that engine and to me hard first start was just the nature of the beast, but it could have been my nature too. Usually it would be at least a month between outings. This gave everything associated with fuel time to dry out. What I started doing was to run it up on muffs before I went out the next day and that pretty much ended the "first start of the day" syndrome. It did "first start" easily in these runups, as compared to sitting on the trailer in the water.

Tell you what. Google or look up in here: "Decarb" do it and then keep Sea Foam in your tank. If that doesn't help with the varying fuel supply at idle condition, come back and we'll brainstorm some more.

The Merc manual said that the test for proper low speed carb adjustment was the hole shot. If you got a good solid shot your low speed jets were fine. If not open up till you get one....considering that lean mixture is your problem.

Last engine I had sneezing was the old OMC twins back in the 50's and 60's. I did have a '72 125 Johnson I bought new but it was 4 cyl and didn't sneeze....one super engine in all regards, but that was my last OMC. I sold it because I got tired of red band towers blowing past me all the time and went with Phantom Black all the way.

OKAY!!!, so i cam back just to post and hope this helps someone else out in the future. so after cleaning carbs and setting fuel idle screws to 1-1/4 turn +1/4, the motor was still sneezing. i finally got tired of thinking about the fuel and noticed when i shut the motor down that the timing advance linkage didnt return to idle timing. i noticed it was kind of stiff but i could manually return it to idle seated position. also noticed a significant amount of slop in it too. took it all apart and found it gummed up and stuck and missing the bushing. cleaned everything and greased and it one again moved easily and sprung back how it was supposed to. made a nylon bushing insert and put everything back together and it no longer had play and the timing advance would spring back normally. started everything up revved it up and so far in the driveway the sneeze is gone and the motor is running great. hopefully all will be good on the water tomorrow!!!!
