I have recently bought a 2000 Bayliner 1950 Bowrider with the 3.0lt Mercruiser and standard prop. To be used for cruising and fishing.

Can anyone answer these questions for me:
1 - What is the most fuel efficient cruise speed/RPM?
2 - What does it weight?
3 - Whats the deal prop for low rpm cruise?
4 - Whatis fuel consumption at cruise and WOT?

Cheers

2 - 2075 lbs plus whatever fuel and gear you have in it.

No idea on the fuel consumption questions, you would need a fuel flow meter to tell you that. The 3.0L is pretty easy on the gas even in a 19 ft boat.

Re: 2000 Bayliner 1950 Questions

1. if you read your manual if you got one, "economy mode" put thottle full down get up to speed then back off at the first sign that speed drops. now if your useing it for cruising can just keep dropping it till you fall off plane figure out what speed/rpm you were going and keep it above that.

2. drive by a weigh station if you want a figure also scrap yards have scales and you can get it off that with in 20 pounds.

3. thinking ideal prop for low rpm cruise would be a 4 blade of similar pitch

4. if your really conserned about fuel sell your boat, other wise they make a cool gauge cost about $250.00 called a fuel management gauge i believe, if will tell you how many gallons are in the tank how many gph as well as how much longer you can cruise before you run out of gas.

no offense for what i said on number 4 but i am 22 and do odd jobs for my family/friends making money, i also have a 5.8l 23 foot sundowner and useually i go threw $50-$100 in gas every time i go out its better to keep the fuel tank above 3/4 then it doesn't hurt your pocket to go out i fill up on my way back in

1. virtually every boat test I've ever read shows the sweet spot (best mpg) for a 4-stroke I/O to be in the 3000-3500 rpm range. Run at a comfortable speed anywhere within that range and you'll do fine.

3. Unless you have a specific need for strictly low-rpm operation, you prop so that your motor reaches maximum recommended rpm when you're at WOT (wide open throttle) with a normal load aboard- passengers, fuel and 'stuff'. Once you're neither under- or over-revving the motor at WOT you're golden. Everything else falls into place and you're achieving best all-around efficiency.

4. HIGHLY variable depending on wind, waves and load, but you should adhere to the '1/3 rule'. Use no more than 1/3 of your fuel going out. That leaves 1/3 for the return trip and 1/3 in reserve- and YES, fuel consumption in lousy conditions can easily increase to the point of needing the reserve. Generally speaking, the 3.0 is about as cheap to operate as it gets.
