2000 Ebbtide w/Mercruiser 4.3 backfires

I have a 2000 Ebbtide with a 4.3 Liter Mercruiser that has about 50 hours on it. Recently, it has started backfiring at mid and full throttle. It sounds more like a "click" but when you open the back hatch, you can clearly hear a backfire (not loud) This boat is very well maintained. I always use 93 octane gas, the boat is stored indoors and kept with a Mercury dealer during the offseason. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thanks! In addition - my fuel gauge suddenly stopped working. The gauge on the actual tank still works though. Any suggestions?

Change the Fuel Filter,....... You've picked up some Water........<br /><br />The Gauge is Probably a Wiring Issue,....... Check All the Connections.........
