I have a 2000 15hp evinrude 4 stroke that I recently bought for a Jon boat. Good compression in both cylinders. Before ever starting I changed oil and changed whole water pump new thermostat lower unit oil new plugs. Went for ride and run great for 15 minutes than went into a limp mode. I thought was hot so I got a thermal gun and tried again and it never got over 150 degrees. If u cut off and crank right up it will run fine for 15 seconds and keep doing same thing. It still has fire and running on both cylinders while in limp mode. Let it sit for a while and it runs again great for 15 minutes and does same thing. I took gas cap off and pulled choke and pumped primer bulb with no results. I’m mind blown on this problem. Has anyone had an issue like this. Thanks in advance.

just a Q ? ... is that engine actually equipt'd with a "pre-ETEC" like EMM to actually know... when to go in limp mode (SAFE mode) or is the engine ..."limping" to lower rpm'S because of fuel, air or heat related issue ?

seems the power pack has been a suspect . when the issue comes up try to cool it down with a coolant spray to see if it starts up again.

the search brings up this issue but feedback is not to conclusive except one case needing 3 packs to fix the issue. power pack quality seems suspect ??.

see a comment in 2001...
Re: 2000 15hp Evinrude quits running

had the same trouble with a 2001 9.9 25".after two omc pack the third from bombardier fix the problem so far.

There’s no light indication on engine or anything saying it’s limp mode I just assumed bc you can cut motor off and start right back up and runs for 15 seconds and does same thing. I’ve checked heat and did all test for fuel and the thing runs like a sewing machine for 15 minutes. I’ll try cooking power pack off and see what that does. Is it ok to spray cold water on it

it is a suggestion based on search results..... up to you

I would not use water...Dollar store keyboard dust spray cans held upside down will shoot coolant .....NAPA or electronics stores may have coolant sprays .
careful with combustible sprays...

or wait here for comments from expert mechanics

Testing must be done.------Test run with another fuel tank and hose first.------Run with a timing light hooked to one cylinder at a time and see if you are loosing spark.---Drain carburetor , then lay motor on it's side to fully drain pocket in the bowl.--Found one of these with water puddle in carburetor bowl " pocket " a few years ago.

So I got home from work and started with the easiest test. I cranked it up and let it run and of course it started doing the same thing so I took my air compressor and blew on the power pack and immediately it smoothed right out and ran perfect for about a minute then went rough again. Blew air on power pack and again it picked right up to smooth idle. So I ordered a power pack tonight. I’ll let y’all know how it turns out. Thanks

have you tried insulating the PP from the engine itself to keep heat away. a few fiber washers to create a space between parts may allow enough heat "prevention"
( I do not know if it can be done or work mind you it all depends if the heat is internal or external to the PP

That’s a good thought I might try that before I put the new one on. I’ll see what I can come up with.

You have to be careful with spacers !----The encoder wheel might start touching the optical sensors / eyes !

And if you want to remove the powerpack you have to position the flywheel so the gap on the encoder wheel does not interfere.

I figured that out the hard way. Good thing I was already getting a new one. I thought of Mabye trying to put some heat tape on instead of spacers. I’ll try to get creative and see what works.

Take an ohm reading on the orange wires coming from stator.---Inspect the pins / sockets.

Think I would check compression again and record the findings for future reference. IMO, 150F is on the high side, measured at the top of the head. If salt water use, you may have some partial blockages in the water passages. I agree that it could be a problem with the power pack (or perhaps a coil). Test for spark loss under way using the method suggested above. No flash means no spark. You may be dropping a cylinder.

Did the power pack fix your problem?I purchased a 99 evinrude 15 four stroke with electric start, and controls. After clearing the carb I got it running, but after 20 minutes or so it starts losing spark.I tested another coil with same results so I’m thinking of ordering a power pack.Hopefully you get this message soon, thanks.
