2000 evinrude 225 ficth, what is the best all around prop

hi, i just bought a 22'angler,it looks like it has the stock prop on it which is alum and its pretty beat up, i'm loking to get a little more all around pick up and mph from the prop, should i be looking for ss or alum? also lots of people are telling me about this new SS merc prop will it fit my motor? is it that great?<br /><br />thanks<br />Chris

Merc builds all props to except flo-torq II hub kits to fit any engine...<br />As for a best all around prop, we need some wot rpm figures to go by with a given pitch.

4800-5200 wot depending on how many people i have in the boat. not sure about the given pitch

5500-6000 is your Max Range....we're not even close.<br />First we need some P/N's from the prop, then we may need a compression check.<br />4800-5200 will kill that engine in a shorter time than you will care for...

did a comp check 115 all across the board, which evindealer said was fine not sure. <br />why will it kill the engine?<br />where can i find the prop P/N<br /><br />Chris

Because you are lugging it...high combustion temps causing coking which will load the ring lands and the heads...eventually you'll break a piston ring, ruin a cylinder or 2, and the deposites cause pre-ignition/detonation which will take care of a piston and cylinder or 2...<br />Need I go any farther???<br />The prop P/N is usually under the washer for the prop nut.

ok this weekend with 2 people in the boat full tank i got to 5200 with motor trimed out of the water a little. went to the boat show as well and saw the new mercury prop that is coming out in may. anyone have input of those props?

Lots of companies intrduced new props this year. Turbo had at least 3 at Miami. Before you throw money at this deal lets establish your baseline.<br /><br />All we know is that the set up is probably not right and we could be hurting the motor each time it's run. <br /><br />When you say "trimmed out of the water a little" -- what do you mean? Could you have trimmed higher and gained more rpm? Or you could only trim a little before it vented (slipped)?<br /><br />We need to know at least the pitch of what you're running. What brand prop would be helpful too.

k got some numbers off the prop 14 1/4x 21. trimed meaning motor pulled up about to start lossing mph which got like 5200rpm and 45 mph with 4 people on the boat, my questions is should i stick with the same pitch just get a SS prop or what?

Thats about 20% slip. I think we can do much better. BTW -- it's impressive you can swing a 21 on a 22' boat that rpm. That thing should fly once you get it dialed in.<br /><br />I hesitate testing with any prop that's "pretty beat up". We just dont know how much of that rpm is gained from the damage. My initial thoughts are that if we stick with a 21 in ss it may prove to have more bite than we can handle (depending on style obviously). I hate dropping to a 19 for fear of losing efficiency.<br /><br />I'd really like to try something with a lot of lift like a Turbo 1 or a Raker in a 20" pitch. The Turbo Lightnings and the Vectors dont go down to 20. The Vector goes down to 21 though.

like i said before 5200rpm is the most i've goten with the motor trimmed up, with the 21" prop. what more number do you need?

Can you borrow a prop from someone to test? Like a 19? Since yours is a 21 and pretty beat up and we need rpm that would be as good a place to start as any.

Sorry, Chris...I should be more clear.<br />Testing with a beat-up prop doesn't tell us much...That's what I meant by what prop...<br />I asumed you had another to try.

ok so i tryed the 19" mirage and it did not pull any more rpm's 5100-5200 at most, it was a demo prop? im lost now.

Nope, you're OK. Actually that's about what I would have guessed. Anyway, that prop has some good bite (as you see). It also likes height. They made those in a couple of diameters, what's this one?<br /><br />At any rate I'd say we need to raise the motor. Where is the motor mounted at now? All the way down (I hope)?

i will look tomorrow, i know it sits real low on the transom bracket, are you asking the diameter of the prop i tried?

Is the engine setting directly "on" the transom at it's lowest point...1 set of holes can make a difference. and yes, what is the diameter of the prop?
