The motor is a 2000 Evinrude FI four stroke that had a rattle. Mod #E50PL4SS.
We pulled the valve cover and could see the tensioner link for the timing chain was broken. We pulled the power head. The auto tensioner is free and seems fine. Chain looks fine. Everything seems ok except for the broken tensioner link. The tensioner pad was not on the link, but doesnt look damaged. The link is just made of stamped steel and looks to have just broken from metal fatigue.
If it was metal fatigue, are there others out there that has run into this? Or am i not finding the real problem? I dont want to put it back together without fixing the true problem.
