Evening all, I am curious as to what type of range this boat would get? Yes, I realize there are a million different scenarios ie., current, weight, weather, speed and the list goes on, so I ask for a 'ball park' estimate. Let me give you the following scenario.

Boat is powered by twin 5.0l Volvo Gi, with the DP stern drives. Lets say two adults on board, and cruise speed (whatever speed that would be on this boat... maybe 25mph'ish).

Reason I ask, I'm looking at this boat located in Douglas Michigan (Western Michigan), and considering if it would be feasible to drive it via the water back to Lake St.Clair... up the east coast of Lake Michigan and back down Huron.

Thanks.

Hmmm - based on my experience with a smaller single engine and smaller boat, I'm going to guess at least 10 gals per hour :(

try more like 18-25 gallon per hour at that speed.... If you get 1 mpg (you MAY get @1.5 mpg) and the tank holds 100 gallons then your range is 66 miles port to port with 1/3 tank reserve... if you can hold 200 gal then 132 miles with 1/3 reserve

I guess I could have mentioned it is a 150 gallon fuel tank.

Smoke, when you say port to port with 1/3 reserve, does this mean there is still 1/3 tank of fuel, or 66 miles with the reserve consumed?

sooo depending on mpg you could go 100-150 miles with 1/3 reserve.

It is generally recommended to plan your trip allowing for 1/3 tank when you reach port to allow a margin of safety

Smoke - that's a pretty adequate power plant for that size/weight of boat eh? With the DP don't think you'd need 5.7l

?

need is a subjective thing... to run 55 mph you need bigblocks..... to plane you need at least v6's

I certainly don't "need" as much engine as I have and I top out at 48 mph

Twin 5.0's at 27mph 3000rpm's burn approx 8.5 gal per hr each. Ask me how i know.If you have the means to trailer it i would do so. The fuel will kill you

I will also second Thalasso's figures on fuel burn. I'd figure a 170 NAUTICAL mile range max, with a decent reserve.

From Sausagetuck/Douglas to Lake St. Clair, will cost you about $900 to have it shipped. I would do that rather than make the trip on water.

Why have a boat if a nice boat ride is too expensive? Seems like it would be a fun trip.

Re: 2000 Four Winns 298 Nautical Range

some of us cruiser owners can't afford trips that cost several thousand in fuel especially not knowing the boat yet and what might break along the way leaving us at the mercy of towing and repair on the water...

I generally don't go more than 15 miles in a day in mine.

Traveling around Lake Michigan on a new to you boat does sound fun on paper. If you have not boated extensively on the
the Great Lakes, you have no idea what is in store for you. It could take weeks if the weather does not cooperate. Costs of
fuel, extended nights at a marina due to rough weather, food etc. Would be a huge expenditure, and potentially a very long trip.

I would have it hauled myself. Especially in a new to you boat.

Agreed. Looking to haul... that's a long ways to go in a 29' cruiser, and I don't have the experience to take a trip of that caliber just yet.

.... that is if I pulled the trigger on this boat. Looking for something with a generator. Would rather not sacrifice, but I'm in no rush being boating season is just about over in Michigan.

Huh, I guess I hadn't though of it that way. My boat days are often more than 100 miles and rarely less than 50, but not on the Great Lakes.
