If the 4 wires coming from the rectifier are connected such that they can be disconnected without removing anything else, it's just removing 2 bolts holding the rectifier to the block ... should be a 5 minute job!

Don't forget to disconnect the battery first!

You are probably referring to testing the stator (under the flywheel) ... that's the part that sends AC current to the rectifier (to be converted to DC). To test it, you will need (at the least) the OEM Johnson/Evinrude service manual (which contains instructions for testing) and a multimeter.

If your motor is running, but just not charging the battery ... it could be that the charging coil in the stator is bad ... but the other coil that supplies a spark to the plugs is OK. Only way to know for sure which component is faulty is to troubleshoot the entire circuit.

Electric "gurus" ... please feel free to jump in and correct me if I've misstated anything!

Not a full test of the stator coils but you could check then for continuity with an Ohms meter. Should find continuity between all three yellow wires coming from the stator.
Should find approx twice the resistance between yellow and yellow blue as between yellow gray and either of the other two.
