sea trials yesterday on my new 2000 19ft proline with a 2000 130hp johnson model j130PLSS with not many hrs on it(thats what i was told).boat was running hot at idle not alot of water coming out of the cooling system discharge.boat would cool right down when i revved it up or got it under way over 2500rpms.alarm never sounded but one time after shutting it down and tried to start it the starter wouldnt turn it over more than a half a turn and the bendix spring would kick in and just spin.it always started when the temp was down any suggestions(water pump,thermostats)?...

"Running hot at idle..." How do you know?? Temp gauge in the dash or temp check per service manual?? Don't necessarily trust dash gauges until you verify they read correctly (or close anyway). Always verify operating temp on the top of the thermostat pocket on that motor. Idle temp spec is 125 to 150, hi-speed temp should not exceed 120 (this is per factory service manual).

T-stats are a good place to start and if the water pump has not been serviced, go ahead and replace it too.

-John

After you verify the engine temp is within specs, you can insert a 1 ohm adjustable resistor from Radio Shack in the guage sensor line and move the guage needle where ever you like, but remember the temp swing may be as much as 30 degrees from idle to run.
