Looking for help I have searched all over for info on this engine but everything shows up as the 225 Ho or the ocean pro.
This engine is the silver/gray and the model number is J225PLSSR. How reliable is this engine? Is this a looper engine
I did the compression check as instructed on the forum(removing plugs, wot, ign.disabled and warm) the numbers came back all within a pound of each other two times. I am looking to buy the rig just want to make sure with people with Johnson knowledge. Idled great and ran very good any info would be appreciated.

Re: 2000 Johnson 225hp Help

Hi JDMoss and :welcome: aboard. No known issues that I'm aware of. Compression numbers that close to each other would indicate a motor with a lot of life left in it. Here is a service manu@l that covers that specific motor. Thought it might help to just go over it and see what it takes to do a tune up and impeller change etc so you know what you're getting into as far as service goes.

Re: 2000 Johnson 225hp Help

According to the Johnson Tech. at our local shop theses were big looper motors that ran a very low compression around 6 to 1many came from the factory with 85 to 100 psi and Johnson really does not have a spec on there compression in the service manuals, all six cylinders were between 91 and 92 nothing over a pound diffrents. the motor cranks right up and idles great and ran very strong the whole time during the test run. i spoke with 3 other techs. in our area and all 3 had the samething to say about the compression numbers also saying they love the gas and oil but if taken care of they will give you a long life with out much problems. going to do the Decarb with the OMC fluid this morning also adding OMC fuel additive starting with this tank

That is a 3.0 liter closed deck looper . It does like the fuel and oil as posted and make sure you change impeller once a year as cooling on the closed deck motors is very important due to piston locating pin failures. That the reason for the cooling mod on these blocks.

Re: 2000 Johnson 225hp Help

JD, another thing to make you feel a little better re: compression. Compression only becomes a real problem when one or more cylinders is 10 to 15% or more off from the others. Even if your cylinders were all at 50 PSI your most likely worst case scenario would be low power but you wouldn't be in danger of hurting the motor. It's when one or two cylinders are way off compression wise that you have one or two cylinders flailing around in the block with not enough compression to slow them down that you run the risk of internal damage from one or more pistons starting to travel faster than the rest.

Re: 2000 Johnson 225hp Help

The newer blocks have a compression relief hole in cylinder to lower compression so engine will idle better. The compression will increase with rpm. One of the racer tricks id to plug hole with allen head screw and peen aluminum down on it to keep from backing out. This will add 10-15 psi at cranking on a guage.
