2000 johnson 50 hp

I have a 2000 Johnson j50plssm and I am wondering what all lower units would be compatible with it and if anyone may have one available for purchase. I don't know if it is the whole lower unit or just the gears and shaft that are messed up. Is there anyone in the tri cities WA area that might be willing to look at it

Those lower units are not robust in my opinion.----Gears often strip teeth !-----A unit from a 2 cylinder 40 / 48 / 50 model year 1993 and newer will fit.

Do you think it is possible that just the gears need replaced or do you think the whole lower unit need replaced

It needs to be taken apart for inspection.--------If gears strip then bits of metal end up in the bearings.-----It is possible to rebuild these.----But you have to find a shop that might have parts.---After market parts is what I use.
