2000 Johnson 60hp trim ram rod question

The motor model number is J60PLSSE. My tilt/trim started leaking recently from the top of the main cylinder. I assumed it needed new seals but looking closer at it, I noticed the ram rod is pitted (see attached pictures). One of the trim rods is also pitted but it is not leaking. My question is, does the ram rod need to be replaced or can I get by with just replacing the seals?

You could try cleaning up the rams with strips of sand paper and see what happens. You may get them cleaned up.

Thanks for suggestion. I hit it with some 320 wet/dry paper, that seemed to get the edges off the pits. I'll go with the seal replacements and more sanding once I get it apart. The top pin seems corroded in by the aluminum, I've used a wire brush to loosen the corrosion some and got the retaining rings off. I'm soaking it with vinegar to see of that helps loosen it some more. Any other suggestions on the seal replacement?

polish them with wet dry and it will be fine. Above the piston is low pressure except when engine is in reverse. Just avoid driving around the lake in reverse gear while also constantly moving the trim up and down.

Dang, that's the only way I catch fish, well that and calling "here fishy fishy". Thanks for the reassurance, I didn't want to have to buy a $500 ram rod.
