Need some direction on what would cause little to no spark on one whole side of the motor. Facing the motor from the front the right bank has little to no spark and as a result the motor stays in the high idle mode for about 5 minutes because that side is not heating up as much as the left side. When it does idle down it idles very low but will stay running. I verified the little to no spark by pulling plug wires off while motor is running, right side I could not see any spark jumping from plug wire to spark plug, left side I do see spark jumping from wire to plug. I thought that the plugs may have been gas fouled because one carb on the right side was dripping gas due to a stuck float, I repaired the float and put new spark plugs but still little to no spark on the right bank of the motor. Any direction or ideas on what to check will be appreciated. This motor is equipped the Optical Ignition System.

Both motors have a single power pack. If V6 motor, check shift interrupt switch, as that kills spark to 1/2 motor.

On either V6 or V4, check overheat sensors, a they kill partial spark as well.

Likely candidate, if spark is bad on 1/2 motor is shift interrupt switch. Disconnect it and see if spark returns.

Diode in wiring harness could also be bad.

Thanks for the direction, I will give it a try. Is this also known as the switch and cable assembly- 0585013, located on the motor where the shift cable connects to the shift assembly?

Thanks for the advice. Unplugged the switch and now have spark to all six cylinders. Bought this motor on E-Bay advertised as a rebuilt unit claiming 20-30 minutes run time to tune carbs. I'm afraid carbs were tuned to a motor with a bad switch as when I unplugged the shift interrupter switch it idled extremely high at 1,800 rpm. I may have to readjust the carbs, what would be a good starting point to have the air/fuel ratio screws be?

I would look into adjusting the throttle cable and idle stop screw first.

You should probably invest in a factory service manual. I would recommend you perform a a link and synch, to get her tuned up.

I have the 1998 version of that motor. It runs excellently.

Quickstart should be disabled above 1500 RPM, if I remember correctly. It doesn't know if you are using the neutral warm-up lever or not. I suspect the PO turned up the idle, rather than find problem and achieve spark to all cylinders...just a guess.

i know on those bitter cold in winter (20 degrees or colder) that I use that idle lever to help start the motor, and I just kept moving it up and down after the motor started because it seemed like the quickstart was off... id rev it to 1500 or more and back off and then rev it and back off...to keep the motor pumping fuel and not idleing, but not letting it over rev......even after 10 second of pushing the key in.... and then holding the key in while cranking... those cold days it takes a little more patience.....soooo the quick start will still be active if i dont rev over 1500???
