2000 Kawasaki 1000 STX DI

Is there a way to check for any engine trouble codes without the KAWDIAG tool that is mentioned in the book? Can you jump a wire or something somewhere and count flashes like a car? Also, is there a "check engine" light (so to speak) on the electronic dash to actually indicate if there was a problem?
