I have a 2000 Maxum 2100 with a 5.0 and Alpha 1. We thought it was having trouble getting out of hte hole with a skier and recently went through the carb, replaced plugs wires, cap/rotor etc, which were all needed, especially the ignition. Took it out to test and it was definitely better. But it still seems like it needs more help. The thing is the engine responds well it doesnt hesitate now it mostly just feels like it lacks power, which is not surprising since its a 305. Once it gets to about 1500 or so it will really take off. If it was a car Id say it needed a higher stall speed converter cause it feels like if the prop would slip a little and let the engine rev up then grab hold it would really take off. So my questions are...

Has anybody had any success venting a prop on a sterndrive and seeing any improvement?

Is it just telling me I needed to go down in pitch to help free up th engine?

The drive is 1.47 ratio and it currently has a 3 blade 17P prop on it, 15 seems small but if it works it works. With 2 people on board it will now rev (after tuneup) to 45-4600 untrimmed, trimming would gain another 2-300 easy but havent tried it with more people yet. Before the tuneup with 4-6 adults it would barely get to 4500 even trimming up a little. Normal load is at least 4 so I'm thinking it might be wise to think about going down in prop and free the engine up a little, just have to be careful not to over rev.

thoughts, suggestions?

The engine rpm's say you are propped about right, if anything a step up in pitch is indicated, which would not help the lowend. But that brings up another question for you, what speed do you achieve now? About 43mph? That will tell us the slip%.

Prop venting may be an option to try, I wish I could help more on that.

Some non-prop options:
Moving what weight you can from the back towards the front may help.
Trim tabs, automatic ones like Smart Tabs, would help some.

Re: 2000 maxxum prop help

going from memory..... I think it was 44 or 45 mph at 4800 trimmed and only 2 adults in the boat. Which I think was right around 15% slip. But from what i remember last year with 6 adults and some gear it was pushing it to get 4500 trimmed.

After thinking about it more after testing it....Im not sure moving anything around is gonna make much difference, its not like it doesnt plane out, its more like it just needs more power to get moving or it needs more off idle torque to get moving. Once it revs a little it comes on plane easily, but it just needs a little help for a hard acceleratiion. Just easy putting around cruising the lake its fine, but trying to pull a skier it just lacks a little. But in the end it is what it is, A bigger engine im sure would help but that aint happening so ill have to make the best of it.

Whats hard to swallow is the previous boat was an older 3.0 OMC and even though it was smaller it actually pulled better from a stop. But the boat was 12-16" narrower and prob 800# lighter so less mass and pushing less water at the same time.

I presently have a 99 maxum 2100 sr with an alpha one like yours but it has a carb'd 5.7L. The prop is a 14 x 19 aluminum 3 blade.
I'm getting 5000 rpm at 50-52 mph. 2-3 adults aboard.
