2000 Merc 60 - Top Cylinder Not Firing

I have a 2000 Mercury 60ELPTO (3 cylinder 2-cycle). The top cylinder is occasionally not firing -- by occasionally I mean that it will work fine for a period (say an hour), then not work at all for a period (say a half-hour). It is not missing; it either fires just fine or it doesn't fire at all.

I had this happen on an older outboard and fixed it by replacing the ignition coil. I think I spent $20 on that part. After visually inspecting the wires and finding them to be OK, I am planning to do the same here. However, I'll apparently be replacing a CDM module as opposed to a coil. I have a two related quesitons:

1) If the wires are sound, is the CDM module the most likely culprit? It would have been an easy decision if the part cost $20, but it's more like $80.

2) I'm guessing that the CDM module is the same as a coil, except that it works with an electronic ignition ... and costs about 4X as much. The schematic says my engine takes two CDM modules #827509T7 and one #827509-A10. The part on my motor is 827589-A8. That's the top CDM module. The other two have the part number 827589-A7. I'm not sure why the top cylinder would have a different part than the bottom two. I figured they were interchangable until I noted that the schematic also shows two different part numbers -- two modules with one part number, and one module of a different part number. Does anyone know why? More importantly, can someone tell me which part number I should replace the faulty module with?

Thanks very much for your help! This board has been incredibly helpful to me in the past. If there is a site sponsor I should purchase parts from please let me know.

I've had great luck on this site before. Does anyone here have any ideas or suggestions about my question above? Thanks.
