Sounds like you may have gotten water in the cylinders when the engine dieseled. Pull the plugs and crank it over to get the water out. Clean the plugs or replace and see if it will start.
If this was in salt water, do it NOW, not 15 minutes from now.

Don S is right on target. It sure sounds like you have water in one or more cylinders. Check it out immediatly.

Once the water is out, I think I would squirt a shot or two of oil in the cylinders and change the oil and filter before trying to start it.

But you still need to figure out what caused the problem (stall and diesel) in the first place. Sounds like the engine may have gotten hot. Any signs of overheating at the time of failure?

Dave

I have to Agree..... With All of the above.......

If it wasn't Overheating,
How about the Fuel ?????
Was it Stabilized ???
Has the Filter been Changed ??? If Not, Remove it,+ pour it into a container, so that you can See What's in it.......

Good Luck,....... And, Welcome to the iboats forums................. :)

I really don't see a reason to change the oil first. The water got in the cylinders from dieseling most likely, and since it only did it about 3 seconds, there probably is very little water or none at all that would have made it into the oil. But it needs to be started to burn any last drops of water/salt water out of the combustion chamber and from around the valves before rust causes a worse problem. Even if for only a minute or two before doing an oil and filter change. Then, after all that, as Dave said, find the reson for the problem to begin with.

Don,
I am sure you are right, the engine probably didn't diesel long enough to get water in the crankcase.

My thought was that the water may have made it's way past the rings and into the crankcase during the subsequent repeated cranking/hydrolocking. If that were the case, best to get it out before mixing it with the oil and running the whole mess through the engine.

Dave

Can you turn the engine over by hand?

Yep, pulling the outdrive would be the next step. If it's an Alpha drive, just be sure to put the shifter into forward first.
