I have a 2000 Mercury 3 cyl 90 hp (serial # 2000 ELPTO)that runs fine until I go over 3000 rpms. It then loses approx. half of it's power but does not stall. Any ideas?

Thanks
D

Just a few possibilities:

1. Its getting hot and the heat sensors are limiting the rpms. Check engine manual for protection devices. VRO sensors could be telling you that the VRO is not working correctly but don't know your engine.

2. Crud in the high speed jets of the carbs.

3. Off brand oil - possible but unlikely if it is running smooth to 3,000.

Thanks SoLittle,

I tried cleaning the carbs. I used new premium oil. Then I went fishing and on my way in I had the same power loss problem, except this time it happened even at lower <3000 rpms. I was trolling at slow speeds for about 2 hrs, so I suspect that I may be overheating. Need to get a manual.

Thanks again,

D
