The temperature warning horn on my xr6 has started going off under load. Usually pulling when skiers, I am able to run about 3 or 4 minutes and the warning horn sounds. I am getting a solid water stream out of my engine, so it does not seem to be the impellor. Any other ideas on what may cause this?

Thanks For the help

That will probably be your water pump impeller.
Even if you have a stream off the tell-tale tube, it doesn't mean it has proper cooling.

Replace impeller and problem will go away immediately, and you better doing it soon, or it might end up like this 2000 XR6:

web page

Thanks Valv,

A picture is worth a thousand words. I have ordered a service manual from Mercury. I have done this once before on a 86' force 125, but I would like a detailed breakdown for my Merc.(still have to pull the lower end right?)

Yes Sir, you will have to pull lower unit. It's not a tough job at all, just beware of hidden bolt underneath gray trim tab, you will have 6 bolts total to remove/loosen, and she'll slide down with no problems.
If you can purchase an impeller kit (includes gaskets) it will be better, and don't toque pump bolts too much, housing is plastic, and can break easily. Also watch speedometer pickup tube (a tiny small plastic tube in front of unit) which could came loose and or break, lower unit so you can access it, then disconnect it (remember to re-connect it, or it will leak water and you won't have any speedometer reading)
Once you do it, you'll decide like I did, to replace it every year, it's a $ 25 job that saves thousands.
