Hi, can't tell you any #s off the old engine because it was a Quicksilver rebuilt, the engine is a TBI system with a dist setup like a late 80's early 90's chevy pickup, merc cruiser book shows it near knock sensor wire but no luck
thanks Bob

Hi there, Your TBI system is basically an electronic fuel injection that utilizes an ECM (engine control module).

That system will not have a purple/white wire to ground out to set timing.

You will need to locate the data link connector and use something like the CodeMate MEFI Code Reader For GM-Delphi MEFI-1 thru MEFI-4

This pocket size tester serves as both an EFI Problem Indicator and a Spark Timing service tool. It is the perfect tool for low volume marine repair shops that troubleshoot a small number of EFI systems a year. CodeMate allows fault codes to be read and allows base spark advance to be set when used with a timing light.

For GM-Delphi MEFI-1 thru MEFI-4
systems only. Not compatible with MEFI-5 systems or 2001 and newer MerCruiser PCM-555 / ECM-555. Part #94008
Rinda Technologies marine diagnostic tools, marine diagnostics, marine scan tools, marine engine software

Hi Bob, Since you mentioned that you know how to work on cars, then i'm sure you know or are comfortable with a few short cuts from time to time? At your own risk, another trick would be to just simply jump pins A & B at the data link connector with a paper clip as long as your ECM looks like this, http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...inbr=4856&bnbr=70&bdesc=Electrical+Components

Pins A and B would be the White/Black and Black wires next to each other.

Here is an example but keep in mind that in photo #3 their C & D is NOT pins C & D. They are actually showing you where pins A & B are located with out telling you to use A & B. :faint2:

Boatinfo - Volvo Penta EF series engines EFI Service Manual

Keep in mind that once you enter service mode, the engine should self rev up anywhere between 1200 - 1800 RPM until you pull it out of service mode.

Hope this helps, good luck.:)
