Hello everyone. I was recommended to come to this board by a friend for knowledgeable answers on boat repairs.

I have a 2000 Seadoo Speedster 200 with the single Mercury V6 inboard 2 stroke. Yesterday I was out cruising and came upon a much shallower spot than I expected and managed to suck up a bit of rocks/sand. I could instantly here clunking somewhere inside the boat so I shut it off. Go to start it back up about 10 minutes later so I can get back to dock and the motor makes a clicking sound but won't start. Eventually the motor fires back up. It's smoking like crazy and when I try to give it more than just a small amount of throttle the motor revs but the boat doesn't go any faster. After trying to accelerate and having the motor rev up it ended up flooding it and I ran into the same scenario as the first time (clicking from the motor, no turning over - resolved after 10 minutes)

Where would I consider starting to make sure there isn't internal damage?

Thanks

Moving to Mercury Outboard forum. You have a Mercury Sport Jet which is an outboard motor on a jet pump, not a true IO.

Update: Just fired it up quick to see if it would dump anything while in my driveway and all I can smell is gas, and it was smoking like I set the thing on fire even when running for only 3 seconds.

Got a manual and some tools?

I would start taking it apart to find out what's going on, or take it to a shop.

I would think something is binding

Smoke: it's a 2 stroke..

I've got tools but no manual. I understand that 2 strokes will smoke, but it shouldnt be this much. It seems to be running incredibly rich suddenly.

Being relatively inexperienced with taking apart motors, where should I start?

if you sucked up rocks, first thing to do is look at the intake/impeller area, make sure that is clear.

Someone I know was mentioning a "raw filter" is that going to be directly above the intake area? I was told to take off the grate and make sure that there isn't anything stuck in there, so I suppose that's where I'll start. Thanks for the help

I have a little recent exp, but with Yamahas. Stop trying to run it!!! You're pump is locked and all you're doing is binding the hell out of the motor, and if you keep it up, you're gonna blow it or at least roast the main bearing. Get the impeller apart and cleaned out. The motor is sealed away from all that except the output shaft. You gotta get the crap out of there. The situation is similar to one we had with a ski rope. Yours should be easier to fix, you probably have just one or two big rocks hung up in it.
As soon as the impeller is free, it'll start right up and run again. After that, if you put it in the water, and it revs but won't go very fast, you've fried the main bearing.

Good Luck! These things are a lot of fun, but they run close to the edge, and you'll be working on them quite a bit.

Very helpful. Thank you for the input. I'll let you know how it turns out afterwards.
