Hey everyone, need some advice on a used motor I bought for my boat. It idles fine, unfortunately it won't run faster that 3 miles an hour! It appears to be a fuel line issue, pump, filter or whatever. If I have someone squeeze the "fuel ball" in rapid motion I can temporarily get up to 10 mph. Does that sound like the fuel pump or filter? I dread sending it to my local Suzuki dealer and paying out the @#$! Thanks for any help! BTW, its not bad fuel, or a bad ball, replaced both!

test compression
test spark
if those to pass rebuild the fuel pump and carbs
if the motor sat several months its possible you have clogged carbs. its also possible the engine is so overpropped it cant turn.
what kind of boat is it and what size is your prop?

Thanks Rod for responding. I have new plugs and the compression is fine. The motor sat for months, I ran it one time for a short journey and it ran rough but ok. Fuel pump or carbs? I will bet it is one of the two. I sprayed engine tuner in it the day before and it ran just fine....then I took it out to the bay in Northern California...the rest is history.

If it has carbs that is probably a good place to start if it's been sitting. If it is a 2000 however it is fuel injected and the fuel pump is the more likely candidate. If you're a mechanic go for it...if not save yourself some money and pay a professional. When you don't know what you're doing you stand an excellent chance of messing it up even more. In my 25 years in business I have countless times seen repairs that cost 4 times more than if the customer had just brought it to me in the first place. Start by figuring out what engine you have..carbs or EFI.
