Hello, I have a 2000 5.0GIPEFS w/ SX-M stuck in reverse. While pulling into the slip I put the boat in reverse to slow down and now I can't get the drive back in neutral or forward. The throttle and gear linkages up at the helm look fine. Now I want to pull the plastic cover off the back of the drive and see if the shifter arm moves with the helm throttle arm. My question is can I remove the plastic cover off the back of the drive while the boat is in the water? I will of course raise the motor. I'm guessing the plastic cover is not water tight but would like some confirmation to get up some confidence. Thanks!

Yes it won't hurt anything too. I believe it is the same as my dp-sm. It is not waterproof.

Fixed! Thank you Lubak572, you saved me the hassle of a tow. There was a broken cotter pin for the shift cable. Easy fix, I just needed the guts to pull the cover with the boat in the water.
