I'm looking at two used 19' boats , one of them has a s 2 stroke,90degr Yamaha 115. The engine looks clean and reportedly has about 300 hrs. on it. From those familiar with this engine, I'd like to know :

1. this engine have a good history, reliable ?
2. does this engine have two 2 throat carbs ?
3. I've spun the prop while it's sitting in neutral and there is a "clicking" sound
coming the prop shaft or gear housing - is that normal ?
4. what should cyl. compression range be in ? ( I'll check before buying )
5. there is an oil tank under the cowling as well as in the boat - why ?
6. the head gaskets dont have factory paint on them, is it reasonable to
believe that the heads have been taken off ?

thanks

I have a 1997 130 V4 Yamaha, with alot of hours on it.

It has been trouble free, except for the lift pump from the main oil tank.

The main tank is just to allow more oil to come along on the boat.

Clicking is not normal, while spinning the prop, try putting the gear shift in F then R then N, and see it it still clicks. It sounds like a shift cable out of adjustment.

Gaskets do not have paint on them.

The engine has 2, 2 barrel carbs. They have been known to drop the red Needle and Seat sealant into the carb bowl. A good carb cleaning fixs it right up.

Good Luck

Does the oil feed primarily from the oil tank that's on the engine? Maybe you could give me a brief overview of how this set-up works.
thanks
