Getting ready to work (fight) with Yamaha over possible blown head gasket - and out of warranty repair so looking for some expert advise....
Had a problem in late 2006 season with bad fuel pump pushing fuel into crankcase - I detected this by pulling dipstick and the oil was flowing out of dipstick hole and then went forward to marina after getting answers here on group discussion. Biggest concern expressed was getting this fixed quickly because excess pressure in crankcase could blow seals...the repair slip clearly indicates that fuel was being pushed into crankcase.
Had warranty repair with new fuel pump done (did not think to have marina check plugs or head gasket - compression test) then winterized and put away for winter of 2006-2007.
Extended warranty expired in April 2007.
Moved boat down to Chesapeake from NJ in June 2007 - straight out of winterization.
Had an issue the other day where alarm came on and oil light was blinking. now engine has never failed to start but was running slightly off on idle. Pulled right back into slip - checked oil but level was between cylinders..so asked for help from marina. They came back with diagnosis blown head gasket as there was water in oil - fouled plugs - I'm waiting for compression test results. Mechanic was on his way with his wife to deliver baby so I am waiting to hear everything - he was a bit distracted.
Anyway - my question: Could the first problem of pressure in crankcase caused by bad fuel pump build up enough pressure to impact the head gasket and the marina perhaps did not catch the problem originally?
This is my second year of boating - this 20" Key West with 2001 115 Yammi purchased in August 2006 and I did my research and everyone said that Yammi's were very reliable - even had the engine/boat surveyed before purchasing. I really appreciate any and all advise - I want to make sure I have my ducks in a row before talking with Yamaha on the potential for having them meet me at least half-way on the BHG repair....I plan on patiently staying on this through all levels of inquiry = "Your answer is no - who is your boss?"
Thanks again! Big E
