Sorry for the new post.
But one more question for Rodbolt.
I went and tested the motor again today and monitored the voltage on the HP pump sensor and it is dropping voltage as soon as try to take off. My vst pressure is remaining at 50 psi.
So is this a good sign that the HP pump is bad?
Voltage is at 3.0 idling and will fall to about .50 volts when taking off
Would the pressure remain good when revving up in neutral?

Thanks in advance!

Re: 2001 150 hpdi

its a god sign the medium pressure inline filter is clogged.
testing in nuetral is about worthless as a teat on a boar hog.
unless all you wish to do is idle in nuetral.
dunno how many times I have to post,HPDI in N runs on 4 cyl at idle,2 cyl above about 1500, means the fuel required is a LOT lower.
its al about the maint or lack of.

It has a new med. inline filer. The metal one that goes between the vst and the high pressure pump.

Re: 2001 150 hpdi

if rail pressure stays at 50 PSI and the HP dumps then either the inline filter is clogged or the filters in the hp pump are clogged. hp pump is non field servicable but flagship marine in punta gorda FL can service it.

Re: 2001 150 hpdi

THANK YOU SIR!
I have the hp pump off right now looking at the filters.
Oil came out of the camshaft area. How do I put oil back in there and what oil is used?

on the stbd side of the HP pump there are two 10mm hex head bolts with a screw driver slot.
take both out to drain the oil, fill from the bottom until it runs out the top,put the top screw back in then the bottom just like changing lower unit oil
the oil is the same oil for your lower unit.

Re: 2001 150 hpdi (FIXED)

Thanks to Rodbolt for all the info.
You were right in that it was a GOD sign that a filter was clogged.
Although it must have been the one in the high pressure pump, since I had removed it and I checked the inlet filter screen again and it was partially blocked.
I could not imagine that it would be this critical but after cleaning it and inspecting the HP pump to the best of my ability it runs like a new motor.
I can only assume that there have been many pumps replaced because of this.
Again I just want to say thank you very much for all the advice and even the typo.
Have a great day and GOD BLESS!

Re: 2001 150 hpdi (FIXED)

one would almost think I have seen it before.
have I had a few pumps apart?yes.
would I do it for a customer? no.
simply because Yamaha clearly states DO NOT open them up as no service parts are avalible and it would open myself to a lot of liability if anything happened.
I will remove them and send them to flagship for cleaning, servicing and testing.

To anyone else I would say to take it off and send it to Flagship as I spoke with them and the price they charge is very reasonable and would be the way to go.

ok i know where you are coming from BUT if you were to remove the cover plate to look behind , how do you separate it from the center rail or does the whole thing come off with the center rail and fuel regulator attached .

Re: 2001 150 hpdi (FIXED)

dunno
I havent dissasembled one in about 5 years.
and then only under protest and a cash payment to save a tournament weekend.
yamaha offers virtually NO parts for ANY part of the HP pump so I dont dissasemble them, if you aint got 5x7 color glossys or video, then thats my story and I am sticking to it.
money was nice that day though :) :)
guy told me it was worth 500 cash if I could get it through the weekend after he got towed in, he placed 2nd and gave be 1000 , was a good day.
year or so later when the powerhead laid down he also got priority service, I worked sat and sun so he could go monday. that tip was rather good as well.
however mechanics CANNOT be bribed :).
