My 01 225 2 cycle FI motor is surging above 2500 rpm's. I have searched the forums and believe it might be the VST filter. I have changed the external canister filter, the sight glass filter in the side of the engine( looked clean). I have bee reading about the VST filter. Is this filter inside the aluminium tank? outside? any o other filters how easy is it to get to. ?

This is something that just started 2 weeks ago. today we ran out for about 3 miles at 4k with no problems. on the way in the motor started acting up. could not get over 2500 without surging, bad almost like someone shut the key off for a second. I would think if there is a restriction in the fuel system it would be consistant once the motor is over a certain rpm.

any ideas?

Surging is almost always a sign of a fuel restriction.

Same symptoms as we had on a 2002 4 stk. Cleaned the VST screen and running fine now. It is not the most difficult job in the world but there was a lot of disassembling to do to get to it. We did it ourselves BUT had a friend who is a mechanic actually turning the wrenches. Unless you are real confident about your abilities get, at least, another competent shadetree guy to help. Make sure that you buy a new "O" ring before proceeding. If you can't get one, put the old one in some kitty litter (a tip that I heard) and let it dry back as closely to its' original shape. You'll need a manual. Good luck. Granpa
