Started having trouble trimming my motor up and down today and when I pulled the boat out of the water I noticed that the starboard side trim piston was stuck in the extended position and would not retract. The fluid level is topped off. Is this something that can be repaired or do I need to start looking for a new PTT.

Re: 2001 250 OX66 Trim Ram Frozen

I did some troubleshooting and if I raise the motor all the way up and support it on the tilt stop, then lower the trim rams, they will both go down but not at the same time. Once one ram starts retracting, then the other will follow. Also once both rams are retracted slightly, I can push on one ram and it will extend the other, and vice versa. Any ideas?

With the engine supported in the up position, turn the manual release valve located on the side of the unit. Now push on the trim rams and see if they will depress. You may have to do this a couple of times. There are shuttle valves and ball valves inside the unit that can get stuck. You may have to remove the unit and give it a good cleaning. Good luck!!!

I loosened the manual valve and was able to depress only one ram about 2 inches. Once the first ram was depressed, I am able to depress the other ram about 2 inches as the first ram is pushed back out, i.e. they alternate when pushed, one in, one out

Maybe the fluid behind the trim piston is not being pushed out? If one of the internal valves is not working properly then maybe it is time for a good cleaning. The unit does have a filter. Just an idea.
