Re: 2001 5.7 Merc Bravo3 random shut off
I have a 2000 5.7 EFI and have been having a similar problem. My dealer was told by Mercruiser to first check the entire fuel system (including the pressure and return lines) before going any further. That checked out, and they were suspecting the ECU (mounted on the portside exhaust riser). The Merc. service advisor told them there were some ECU's that didn't hold their programs and asked my dealer for the engine serial #. My ECU was not a "problem" ECU, so Merc. instructed them to replace the ignition coil and wires. Since winter has set in I haven't been able to try it, but my dealer is reasonably convinced the problem was with the coil. BTW- he has told me if the problem persists to pull the ECU off the riser and keep it away from a heat source- he's thinking the ECU might be getting too hot. We'll see in the spring......
