2001,50 hp merc.
Just left the dock and suddenly lost rpm gage [read out] and battery shows 12v or slightly less -->discharging?
I have extended waranty, but is this a problem that I can address myself without an extended [spring time]stay in the shop?
Motor cranks [so far]and runs fine, nothing else seems out of the ordinary.
Thanks,

Sounds like your stator or rectifier/regulator crapped out. Might want to pull the cover off an look at where all the wires congregate from the stator. The 60 cu. in. (40, 50, 60 HP 3 cylinder 2 cycle)late model Mercs have a problem from the factory where they tie wrapped the wires so tight at the bullet connectors that they short out(sharp edges from crimps on bullet connectors). This is known problem with this particular motor and Mercury will fix it. The parts are PROHIBITVLY expensive as this particular engine has an 18 amp output. Labor is about 2 hours if they have the parts. On the other hand...maybe you jus got a loose wire....check all the bullet connectors for corrosion, spray some LPS 3 on them and put back together. I have one of these engines and manual, let me know if you find the problem. I had the shorted problem with mine and Mercury fixed it OUT OF WARANTY!...The fix is to tie wrap the wires and not the bullet connectors

There is also a fuse at the top of the "electricle rack" on the right side rear of the power head, check that and make sure all your cables are clean and tight at the battery and engine. Check these things and lets us know. If it still dosen't work, get a little cheap volt-ohm meter and get back to us for the next step in checking diodes and stator.....

Our motor problem is a lot more serious than I thought. ALL WIRES on one side if the engine have melted and BURNED, shorting out everything.
We had a fire and didn't even know it.
We found a good local guy at our marina to do the warranty repairs for us, and expect to have the boat back in 7-10 days, not the 6-8 weeks that 2 different local Merc dealers told us.
A lot must be replaced, complete new wire harness, stater, relays, etc. etc.
There were 3 other Merc engines at the marina that had the same problem. The estinated cost is over $600.
Thank God we paid for the extended warranty.
Our out of pocket will be $50.
Thanks again four help.
;)

Just check when they are done and make sure that the wires and NOT the bullet connectors are cinched up with the tie wraps. Like I said.."known problem..."

I have already had that conversation with the repair man. BUT, I intend to check it myself.

Is there a recall on these motors,
I don't feel that I should have to shell out the $50.00 deductable. For such a stupid move in the manufacturing process, after all we have a lot of $$$ already tied up in the extended warranty.
Who do I contact to rase hell about this problem??
Thanks,

That I don't know...like I said, mine was out of FACTORY warranty by about 3 months and Mercury agreed to fix it. Come to think...I had to pay about 50.00 bucks too...but better than $600.00
