I bought a 14' boat with this engine on it. Its carb was replaced with a 15 hp carb of the same year model, before I bought it. The carb was cutting out so I cleaned it and ended up cleaning it again a day later. It still cuts out. Do I need to change the timing for this carb, or did I miss a jet/pickup something from the tank? Thank you in advance for all responses.

Its actually not a 2001 its a 2000 MFS 9.9B, but the parts manual calls the 9.9B a 2001. I looked through the parts, so I know the main difference between a 15 and a 9.9 is the main nozzle and two jets in the carb. It was cutting out when I bought it, but I got a good deal and figured it needed a carb cleaning. The carb was dirty and it runs better, just not in midrange.

Actually the carb venturi is also different. Also, model year is insignificant. Precise model/serial is what you need for proper servicing.

I would get a Factory service manual, available at any dealer, and do a thorough diagnosis. Odds are that a proper soaking in real carb dip will clear out any varnishing in the small passages.

So I bought a gallon can of carburetor cleaner and broke the carb down into smaller pieces with no rubber and soaked overnight. I then blew everything out with aerosol carb cleaner. I put it all back together and still the same story. What is the timing on this engine supposed to be?

I forgot to say it backfires if I hold it at midrange, especially if i push it down by the link rod on the side of the carb.

A backfire is ignition or a busted flywheel key. Timing is fixed/by belt/cam by using your service manual.
