Hello, I just purchased a pontoon boat knowing that the power tilt and trim motor was dead. Referencing the Mercury parts exploded diagrams on the internet for a 2001 60 hp 2 cycle Mercury Bigfoot indicates that the replacement part is 893907A02. The only issue I have with this $500 replacement part is that if I search ebay and the internet, a very similar mercury power tilt and trim motor (809885A2) is available for $180. My question is this...Are these possibly interchangeable? The $300 savings is attractive. I wouldn't want to go through a custom retrofit but thought others might have been down this road before with a succesful swap. Cost differential would surely allow for some risk as well. Should I entertain the thought of this or just bite the bullet and shell out the $500? Or, are there other used/remanufactured suppliers that I haven't found in my search. I've included an attachment that shows both trim motors. They look like identical exploded diagrams, but sure know that this might not result in everything being the same size. They look so close that I thought it was worth asking. Your opinions appreciated.

Most pontoon boats I have been around don't need tilt/trim. The pontoons are so large the motor clears the ground easily while trailering even in the full down position. I guess you might want to raise it if stored in the water.

Although I agree that power trim is not as important in a pontoon, I do my boating in salt water so it is good to pull it out of the water overnight. The water is also shallow in spots and a tilt would be helpful at times. In addition, the trailer I curently have is oversized and has an axle behind the motor requiring the motor to be up to launch. The last reason to trim is to tilt the motor before beaching Thanks

I found that the two motors cross referenced to each other, so I was able to buy the cheaper one and save the money.
