Hello everyone, new boat owner here. I have a 2001 Chaparral that was given to me recently. It has a Volvo Penta stern drive and possibly a Mercruiser 3.0 L inside. Everything bolted to the block has Volvo written on it (alternator, drive belt, etc). So whatever block I have I’m assuming that when I need parts I will get them for a 3.0 L Volvo.

I’ve tried to look up parts for a 3.0 L Volvo and there seems to be a lot of options approximately 16 choices with varying letters. Does anybody know which one I use to get correct parts for a 2001? Initially I want to get a fuel pump, water impeller pump and possibly tune up parts.

The boat sat for a long time and was never winterized. I know it needs a shifter cable and also there is no fuel getting to carburetor. I began working on it last weekend, I drained fuel tank, replaced battery and added 3 gallons of fresh fuel. I did remove spark plugs from block and cranked engine over, no water came flying out. Hopefully the engine block survived not being winterized.

Thanks

If it has a Volvo Penta out drive it has a Volvo Penta power engine, all that really means is that VP marinized the basic engine from GM or Ford most likely. when your after engine you should be asking for 2001 Chaparral with a Volvo Penta 3.0l gsi,gsx or what ever you have(should be right on the flame arrester cover. As for your correct letters go there should be a tag on the block near the oil filter that will have those #s on it my also be on the area on the engine were the engine module is maybe by the circuit breakers are on the engine. you will also need to know what outdrive you have (DP, SX and so on) there's a lot to learn. As far as the fuel pump goes don't just run out and by a fuel pump without doing proper diagnostics, all that stuff is available on line or invest in a Sealock manual for that year Volvo Penta it will tell you how to find all the #s your looking for

It’s a GM engine block, I saw that cast into it. The cover on top of flame arrestor says Mercruiser Alpha 1 LX. My friend said the engine was replaced prior to him purchasing. I think they just replaced the long block and bolted everything from the original onto it. I bought the Clymer and Seloc manual for it. I tried to upload picture but it’s to large of a file. I don’t know why the mechanic that did the work put the Mercruiser cover on there?
I don’t know why the fuel isn’t being pumped to carb. Seems to me it’s either a blockage in line or a pump. This boat has been sitting for over 5 years.

Sounds like someone stuck the wrong flame arrester or cover on it, sitting for 5 yrs could be lines, filters, relay. lots to check and it will be hard to fix if you can't figure out what it is

I`d check compression before going in too far. If there is a deeper problem because of no winterization, what engine you have now will not matter.

Hi all, this boat is a 2001 Chaparral180 SSE. The shifter cable is broken. It’s red in color and has the numbers 301947-03-168 printed on it. It has a Volvo Penta SX outdrive. I can’t find the part number on the internet. Amazon has several listings for marine cables but I would rather not order the wrong one. I believe the last three digits (168) when divided by 12 gives you 14 feet. Does anybody know what cable I need?
