I have a 2001 9.9 "rude" that bogs down after running for about 20 min. I have cleaned the carbs with an ultra sonic. I have replaces the fuel pump and all fuel lines. The coil has also been replaced. I can run the boat with no problems for about 20 min. Then it acts like it runs out of gas. Squeezing the primer bulb and spaying fuel in the carb has no effect. Anyone have any other ideas?

It will stay running at an idle. as soon as you get over 1/4 throttle it acts like you run out of gas. The float bowl is full.

Check your valve lash and head temp (use an IR gun).
When did you last change impeller?

I will check the temp of the head. This motor has low hours. The impeller was replaced last year. I am a marine tech, and this motor just has me stumped. Thank you for your help and if you have any other options, i will be glad to hear them.

Try putting a timing light on it, watch it and see what it does when it wants to bog out after the 20 min.

Where are you from ??

Tried the timming light. The motor doesn't lose spark

When it's running right, will the mtr bog down when you spray fuel into the carb ??

Boobie, Went to work on it today and now it will only start and then die. It will only start with the idle lever in full throttle. I am starting to think that the carb has an internal crack. By the way, I am from Ohio

What kind of an open air gap will the spark jump on a tester ?? Sounds like you should look very carefully at the carb again.

It will jump a 3/8" gap on the spark tester. I did replace the head gasket. Going to bouble check the timming is right. Then remove the carb agian and inspect it carefully.

OK, This motor is a POS!!!!!!!!!!!! I have removed the intake and replaced o rings on intake. 1 of the appeared to be leaking. I have removed the carb and inspected. No problems found that can be seen by the naked eye. It is clean and see no cracks. I am ready to sink it in the lake. This thing will only start by full throttle and choked. It will only run for about 2 or 3 seconds then die. No matter what you do to it. Does anyone have any ideas?

Just guessing, but could you have a fuel line that colapased on the inside from the good old ethanol fuel and is blocking the fuel flow.

By experience I know that those engines are very sensitive to too much fuel!! If not pushing in the choke within 1/2 second, it will die!
Could it be it gets too much?

Re: 2001 evinrude 4 stroke 9.9

All of the fuel lines are brand new. The only fuel that has been ran in the motor since I started working on it is ethenol free 90 octane. I spoke with a friend that is a master tech in Evinrude/ Johnson. We have came to believe the carb has something internal wrong with it. He also said that this year of motor is known for it. That is why BRP stopped making any parts for them. They want nothing to do with them.

Thanks to everyone with your help and ideas.

I think I would call BRP customer service and see what they have to say. Do you work for a BRP dlr ?

Re: 2001 evinrude 4 stroke 9.9

The main problem with those carb versions used at those engines are they are 'converted' 2-stroke carbs. On top, the later versions lack the idle-mix adjustment screw they had 1999:
http://www.marineengine.com/parts/j...acturer=Evinrude&section=Carburetor+--+9.9+Hp
The low vacum in the intake manifold compared to the suction in a 2-stroke set-up with same carb, simply does not work. The slightest leakage in an intake valve, loss of vacume and STOP!
To get it running, you may have to pull the head, lap in the valves and re-assemble.
You may try to do a leak-down test and check if any leakages on the intake valve side.
Take off the intake manifold and tape surgical glove as membrane over each intake port. When applying pressure through the plug hole, leakage is easily spotted as the 'glove' will balloon out.
