Re: 2001 Evinrude Ficht Ram 225????
It could be a good motor. It might not be.
2001 is the transition year. It is the year that OMC went out of business and BRP took over. It is the year after OMC got most of the issues with the FICHT motors worked out. It is the first year the FICHT motors finally got to the point that you can rely on them being pretty good.
Today, if the motor you're looking at has good compression and seems to be well maintained it could be a great bargin....anything that says FICHT on it takes a hit on resale value.
If you plan to maintain the motor youself, the regular maintenance items are as easy to service as any other motor. It is if/when you have issues with the motor that it can get to be difficult. Although, I am finding that for the simple mechanical and electrical items there is no special skill required to service these things. Really the only thing that will require special skill/tools is anything to do with the computer and/or fuel injectors. At that point you either need to get the software, connector cable and a laptop (and the knowledge of what you need to do) or you need to bring it in to a qualified service shop.
