As many of you know the 2001 Mercury EFI 4 stroke motor is essentially a Yamaha with Mercury badging. I asked this question on the Mercury site and got no response, so hopefully the Yamaha experts are more willing to chime in.
After completing a job on the VST, the motor wouldn't start. It would turn over fine but not even kick. The only difference from the way it was when I started the job was that I found a loose connector near the top of the motor above the throttle bodies and connected it. When I disconnected it again the motor fired right up.
The connector goes to the idle air control unit, and the manual says that if that connector is not in place the motor will idle a little fast, which it seemed to do last summer. The local marina did the VST job last time and may have left it loose. My theory is that they had the same issue that I had and didn't want to essentially redo the job for the idle air control. Anyway, the manual does not say it won't start if the idle air control is bad.
My question is, does anyone know if the idle air control is bad and not working, will that keep the motor from starting? Also, there is some kind of an intermediate cable with the same connector ends up near the IAC. Is that cable needed? I tried it both ways without success.
